S. MIGUEL DE MACHEDE – HERPAGES

The hybrid piece in the form of net art and an artist book, S. Miguel de Machede – Herpages pays tribute to the lives of rural working women from the village of São Miguel de Machede, in the municipality of Évora, Central Alentejo, who lived through the Estado Novo dictatorship (1933-1974), and aims to contribute to weakening social amnesia surrounding women's stories. The images and texts in the work are derived from the oral memories of the women themselves, collected through informal conversations, in which they confidently and honestly shared their experiences in the areas of work, family, health and leisure. This work was developed as part of a project in which I participated, at the invitation of Casa do Montado, in 2023, entitled AAA+8 Women, Practical Knowledge and the Montado. The project was presented at the Artes à Rua 2022 festival in Évora by Casa do Montado, in partnership with Associação Ser Mulher, Associação Fábrica Catalã, Escola de Artes and the Centre for Art History and Artistic Research at the University of Évora.
