ABOUT

I teach Conservation Biology, Natural Resources Management and Mammalogy at the University of Évora and I'm in charge of the Conservation Biology Lab since 2003.

I’m a researcher at the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources – Pole of Évora where I’m the vice-leader of the Applied Ecology Research Group. I’m also a partner of the Institute of Mediterranean Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (ICAAM).

My research area ranges between "Applied Population and Community Ecology" and "Landscape Ecology" and in the last five years my main interests have been focused on the following main topics:

  • Effects transport infrastructure on wildlife, including description of road/rail kills patterns and determination of main landscape features associated with fatality hotspots; quantification of barrier effect; and evaluation of the effects of linear infrastructure disturbance on abundance and space use of different wildlife species
  • Effects land use changes on landscape functional connectivity and implications for long-term metapopulation persistence
  • Biocontrol services provided by bats and birds in Mediterranean farmland
  • Biodiversity recovery and habitat rehabilitation in strongly changed and degraded areas

I've studied different species and communities, but my main targets have been mammals. I've dedicated a large part of my research to the study of voles, but in the last eight years a large part of my research have also been devoted to bats, rabbits and carnivores.

Currently I’m the head of the LIFE LINES - Linear Infrastructure Networks with Ecological Solutions (LIFE14 NAT/PT/001081) co-financed by the European Commission (see more at https://lifelines.uevora.pt/)
