RESEARCH AREAS
Main area: stochastic
differential equations and applications, particularly models, in a randomly
varying environment, of population growth and harvesting and of animal growth
in farming (modelling; mathematical study of the models; statistical methods of
estimation, testing and prediction).
Other areas: mathematical
models in population genetics, epidemiology, and human mortality rates;
financial applications of stochastic differential equations; statistics.
Has coordinated projects in
the area of probability, statistics and applications of the Research Centre in
Mathematics and Applications of the Universidade de Évora.

colleagues, the first class of the Universidade de Évora, on Nov 10, 1975.
Gave his Last Lecture at the
Universidade de Évora (“A Matemática, o Acaso e a Vida”, Mathematics, Chance
and Life) on May 23, 2018.
Lectured more than
thirty different courses in licenciatura, master and doctoral degrees, mainly
in the areas of Mathematical Modelling in Biology, Stochastic Processes,
Probability, and Statistics, but also in other areas of Mathematics (Analysis,
Measure, Topology, Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Geometry). Most were
lecture at the Universidade de Évora, but he also taught at the Universidade de
Luanda and, as a visiting professor, in several Portuguese and foreign
Universities and at national and international Summer and Autumn Schools.
Author of several class notes.
Has developed many activities
(publication of articles, debates, conferences, mini-courses, interventions in
discussion panels at scientific meetings, teachers meetings, high schools, etc)
concerning scientific dissemination and intervention in issues concerning
research, education, and teachers training.
Was a member of the
Counselling Committee of the REANIMAT Project (Gulbenkian's Project for the
Scientific Reanimation de of Mathematics in High School).
