Personal Profile
I have a fascination for learning and for teaching and I see almost any subject as an opportunity to learn more and teach better. In over fifteen years teaching in higher education, I have covered various disciplines of mathematics and computer science, always looking forward to evolve in teaching each subject.
Key Skills
Communication with others in a work or social setting
- As a teacher, I have taught classes from two to over a hundred students. Some classes are in small rooms while others are in high capacity amphitheaters;
- Occasionally, I attend to scientific conferences to present a paper to an audience that potentially has a deeper understanding of the topics related to my work than I do;
Writting
- I have wrote an introductory book to computer science, to be used as handbook in Mathematics and Informatics undergraduate courses;
- In the disciplines that I am responsible for teaching usually I write a textbook with a condensed exposition of the contents and exercises;
Leadership / Planning and organizing
- In 2010 I coordinated the organization of a national event — MIUP 2010, Inter-University Programming Marathon — involving (almost) every computer science department in Portugal, my university and international organizations that frame these competitions at national level;
Decision making / Time management
- Since the beginning of my teaching career that I am responsible for the educational content and by the assessments of the subjects I teach. Such responsibility entails selecting topics that will be addressed, those that are ignored and choose a process of evaluation that is fair and complete;
Teaching and Coaching
Problem solving
- When I encounter obstacles (of the students, or for lack of funds) to teach certain topics, usually because they require some abstraction, I try to make students meet the need of certain concepts from concrete problems. In general, making the evaluation of the course depend on a practical development project;
